Ann Bennett is a British author of historical fiction. Her first book, Bamboo Heart: A Daughter's Quest, was inspired by researching her father's experience as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway and by her own journey to uncover his story. It won the Asian Books Blog prize for fiction published in Asia in 2015, and was shortlisted for the best fiction title in the Singapore Book Awards 2016.

That initial inspiration led her to write more books about WWII in Southeast Asia - Bamboo Island: The Planter's Wife, A Daughter's Promise, Bamboo Road: The Homecoming, The Tea Planter's Club, The Amulet, and The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu. Along with The Lotus House, published in October 2024, they make up the Echoes of Empire Collection.

Ann is also the author of The Oriental Lake Collection - The Lake Pavilion and The Lake Palace, both set in British India during the 1930s and WWII, and The Lake Pagoda and The Lake Villa, set in French Indochina.

The Runaway Sisters, USA Today bestselling The Orphan House, The Child Without a Home and The Forgotten Children are set in Europe during the same era and are published by Bookouture. Her latest book, The Stolen Sisters, published on 29th November 2024 is the follow-up to The Orphan List (published by Bookouture in August this year) and is set in Poland and Germany during WWII.

A former lawyer, Ann is married with three grown up sons and a granddaughter and lives in Surrey, UK. For more details, please visit her website www.annbennettauthor

I have now read almost all of Ann Bennett's books!!! This is my favorite, I finished it in one setting, just couldn't put it down!! Lena's story was so interesting.. Reading her diary along with her granddaughter was beautiful... WW2 was such a awful time and I never realized how India was so devastated....All of the books of Ann Bennett were very interesting but one (which I won't name) kept my engaged until the end... All of the other books get 4 stars.

I really was intrigued by this book. The setting was fascinating and the wartime environment pulled me in. I've read quite a lot of WWII novels and history set in Europe, much fewer set in Asia. The contemporary portion was also well done although the ending was a bit predictable and "romance" more than I would have liked. Otherwise a great read!

    Good historical fiction.

Meh. Such an interesting topic so dully written. The book is not detailed enough to be a history, nor is it spun with characterization and dialogue that would make the romantic storylines plausible. Plodded through it hoping it would get more appealing. The writing was grammatically correct and didn’t spot but a few typographical errors made in the digital version.

Having read all the books in this series, this new one did not disappoint. The tie in to fortune
telling, added to the mysticism in the perfect location of India & Nepal. I love the historical context along with the added romance. It's really 2 stories in one, as it also reflects the life of the granddaughter who is just learning about her grandmothers war time experience, posthumously. At the same time, she is traveling to those far off places to try to understand what really happened & also to find her own happiness.

Anne Bennet is a truly brilliant writer. I was born in 1941 during the time some of this story is set. My mother related to us the harrowing time escaping from Burma as the Japanese were attacking trains and the airfield where we took of on the one but last Dakota flying out to India. Many of the places we visited a few years ago like Shillong and Kohima are amazing. I was following in my mother's footsteps all those years ago in 1942. My Dad was retreating with the 14th Army trekking out to India. The dangers for the civilians and troops must have been hazardous. Many died on the way. Anne Bennet captured so much in this novel. She did her research so well. Brilliant.
